High potential and gifted education (HPGE)
At Newling Public School, we understand the value of challenging students creatively, intellectually, physically and socially and emotionally. We aim to recognise and nurture these strengths early. We believe students who can recognise their own strengths, and are afforded opportunities to grow these strengths, are more prepared for a successful transition to high school and beyond.
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
Project Based Learning
Project Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered teaching method where learners gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge. It emphasizes real-world relevance, collaboration, and critical thinking, culminating in a public product or presentation
The Premier’s Sporting Challenge
The NSW Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) is a 10-week initiative promoting physical activity for students and staff, usually running during Terms 2 and 3. Participants track daily activity to earn Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Diamond awards based on time, aiming for at least 60 minutes, fostering healthy lifestyles in schools.
Music and Creatives Arts
Each year our students are given many opportunities to particpate in both musical and creative arts activities.
- Weekly music lessons
- Eisteddfod performances
- Art entries into the Armidale and New England Show, NERAM's Let's Hang It exhibition and other Community events
- Aboriginal Dance and Art workshops
- School Performance
The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. Now in its 25th year, the NSW PRC is the largest reading challenge in Australia!
